Dr Frederick Stocken’s teaching is mainly for the Royal College of Organists (RCO) Academy. He enjoys teaching the organ at all levels, and also complementary musical topics, especially for the written exams of the RCO.
He will start as an organ teacher at Junior Academy in September 2016.
Frederick taught a keyboard musicianship course for undergraduates at the University of Manchester whilst he was researching his PhD at the university. He has also taught at Oxford University.
Frederick devised Scale Shapes, which is published by Chester Music, and is now in its third revised edition; see under ‘Other Publications.’ It is a diagrammatic aid to scale learning used by many teachers and students.
Frederick’s teaching led him to become an examiner for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM), and he now not only examines both grade and diploma exams but also helps train new examiners. Frederick has given many talks to teachers on behalf of the ABRSM. Frederick also examines for the Royal College of Organists.
Because of Frederick’s expertise on Bruckner the London Philharmonic Orchestra invited him to give a pre-concert talk on Bruckner in the Royal Festival Hall, and he also gave a pre-concert talk for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
