Archangels in Cambridge

Two organists played Archangels within days of each other in Cambridge in 2023. Paul Greally performed the set of three pieces in a recital at King’s College on 29 January. Then on 1 February Joe Beadle played St Michael from Archangels as the voluntary in the BBC Radio 3 broadcast of choral evensong from Pembroke College.

Commission from St George’s Cathedral, London

The Wisdom of Christ has been commissioned by St George’s Metropolitan Cathedral to mark the 175th anniversary of its foundation.  The first liturgical performance was during the commemorative mass on Tuesday 4 July 2023. The first concert performance will be at a concert at the cathedral on 3 November 2023. The piece is for choir and organ, and the text is from the homily given in the cathedral by John Paul II on his visit to the U.K. in 1982.

Carol of the Annunciation

Frederick’s Carol of the Annunication was commissioned by the John Bradburne Society to mark the centenary of his birth in 2021. Since its premiere by The Bury Choral Society it has been sung by the choirs of St Catharine’s College, Cambridge, St Giles Cripplegate, and St George’s Cathedral, Southwark, most recently again at St George’s on 25 March 2023 for the Feast of the Annunciation.

 

Organ premiere in London

The Day nor the Hour, a 5-minute piece for organ which Frederick premiered at Methodist Central Hall, Westminster, in 2022 is being developed into a bigger multi-movement work – this cycle will be a companion to Archangels and Faith, Love, Hope.

 

The Newman Mass

This is sung regularly as a congregational mass setting at St George’s Cathedral, and parts were sung at the Holy-Week Chrism Mass for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Southwark on 5 April 2023 in a packed cathedral and broadcast online.

 

The New Oxford Organ Method

Published in 2020, this organ tutor is already on its sixth impression. Frederick and his co-author Anne Marsden Thomas were invited in July 2022 to give workshops at the American Guild of Organists conference in Seattle.  In November 2022 Frederick gave a presentation about The New Oxford Organ Method to the Association of Cathedral Organists.

 

11 students gain RCO diplomas

At the RCO conferment ceremony in Southwark Anglican Cathedral on 4 March 2023 Frederick’s students celebrated a number of diploma successes. From the Junior Academy, where Frederick shares the teaching with Anne Marsden Thomas, two organ students gained ARCO, one winning 6 prizes and another winning 3 prizes. Five students who studied ARCO written work with Frederick received diplomas. Another four students studying FRCO written work gained diplomas, one winning 3 prizes.
